So many kids struggle to learn to read, not because something is wrong with them, but because most approaches were never built around how they actually learn. If you’re a parent watching your child struggle to learn to read, you’ve probably heard some version of this: “He just needs to try harder.” “She’s not focused enough.” “He’ll catch up eventually.” “You just need to read with him more.”

Here’s the truth: the problem is rarely the child. The problem is that most education — from elementary classrooms to corporate training rooms — was never built to address the whole learner.

I’ve spent nearly 30 years working at the intersection of education and technology, across K-12, higher education, medical education, even nuclear industry training. Along the way, I kept noticing the same gap, no matter the setting: instruction focused on what to teach, and almost never on who was doing the learning.

That gap became personal in 2009, when my wife and I realized something wasn’t right with our son’s reading. It took until 2013 — and a mentor who finally showed us what we’d been missing — before we understood why nothing else had worked. Today he’s a college student who reads for enjoyment. That journey is the reason Bright Futures Reading Lab exists, and it’s why I look at reading struggles differently than most.

Here’s what most approaches miss.

1. Education Is Entertainment and Engagement — Whether We Admit It or Not

No one learns well while bored, checked out, or disengaged. Yet most instruction is designed as if attention is guaranteed instead of earned. Engagement isn’t a bonus feature you add after the “real” teaching happens — it’s the prerequisite that makes the real teaching possible at all. A method that can’t hold a struggling reader’s attention can’t teach them anything else, no matter how sound the underlying content is.

2. How the Learner Learns Matters as Much as What They’re Taught

Every learner processes information differently — some need to see it, some need to hear it, some need to move through it physically before it clicks. A one-size-fits-all method will always leave some kids behind, not because they can’t learn, but because they weren’t taught in a way that matched how they actually learn.

3. The Emotional Side of Learning Can’t Be Ignored

How a child feels about a topic, about learning itself, and about themselves as a learner all shape whether new information sticks. A child who feels ashamed or anxious about reading isn’t in a state where their brain can absorb much of anything — the emotional barrier has to come down before real progress can happen. Confidence isn’t just a nice outcome of good instruction. It’s often a precondition for it.

4. The Brain Is a Muscle — Movement Matters

This one surprises a lot of parents: physical movement plays a measurable role in learning. In Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain (2008), Harvard Medical School psychiatrist Dr. John Ratey makes the case that aerobic exercise physically changes the brain in ways that support sharper thinking and better cognitive performance. One striking example he points to is a school district in Naperville, Illinois, where a daily fitness program was linked to the district’s students ranking among the best in the world on international science testing.

The takeaway for struggling readers: movement isn’t a break from learning. It can be part of what makes learning possible.

5. Nutrition Fuels the Learning Brain

The brain runs on what you feed it — literally. Research consistently links nutrition to attention, memory, and academic performance in children. A few things worth knowing:

None of this means a better diet alone will fix a reading struggle. But it does mean that a child who’s hungry, dehydrated, or running on poor nutrition is fighting an uphill battle before instruction even begins.

6. Focused Beats Long

Here’s something that surprises a lot of parents: effective learning doesn’t take very long. What matters far more than the number of hours is whether those hours are focused and engaged.

Homeschooling offers a striking real-world example of this. Research from HSLDA’s Director of Research found that 3rd and 4th grade homeschool students can spend as little as 2–3 hours daily in academic pursuits and match the progress public-school students make in a full school day. Multiple studies have found similar patterns across other grade levels — a public-school day tracked in one study set aside 250 minutes for academic instruction, yet students showed key learning behaviors like actively reading, writing, or discussing material for only about 67.5 of those minutes, roughly 16 minutes of real engagement per classroom hour.

The takeaway isn’t that more instructional time is bad. It’s that a little bit of genuinely focused, engaged learning outperforms a lot of passive, unfocused time. A handful of memorable, meaningful moments will move a struggling reader further than hours of going through the motions.

This is exactly why our approach prioritizes quality of engagement over quantity of time — because that’s what the evidence, and experience, both point to.

7. Learning Should Be a Form of Play

Put it all together — real engagement, an approach matched to how the child learns, emotional safety, movement, and a well-fueled brain — and you get something that looks a lot like play. Active, coordinated movement — sports, dance, games that get kids moving and thinking at the same time — taps into the same brain networks tied to attention and learning that we touched on earlier. Kids don’t resist play. They lean into it. When learning is structured to feel that way, instead of like a test of what’s wrong with them, everything changes.

The Bottom Line: Why Kids Struggle to Learn

Kids struggle to learn to read for a simple reason: the approach around them hasn’t accounted for the whole picture — how they think, how they feel, how they move, how they’re fueled, and how their time is spent. It doesn’t take hours of drilling to move the needle. It takes the right kind of attention, for a shorter amount of time than most people assume.
