Our Story
Bright Futures Reading Lab grew out of an effort to help my son learn to read.
We knew something wasn't right when he was four years old. He was bright, curious, and capable, but learning to read was far more difficult than it should have been. For years, we searched for answers — investing countless hours, pursuing evaluations, trying different programs, and spending more money than most families could imagine. Homework often ended in frustration and tears.
Like many parents, we knew our child was capable of more, but we couldn't find a clear path forward. By the time we found answers, he was finishing fourth grade and reading at an introductory first-grade level.
Most of the people trying to help us were caring professionals who genuinely wanted to make a difference. The challenge wasn't a lack of effort — it was that many of the answers we needed simply weren't widely understood at the time. We eventually learned that reading difficulties often require a different approach: one that identifies and develops the specific skills each child needs to become a successful reader.
What followed was years of learning, research, assessment, and intervention. Along the way, we discovered something important: many struggling readers are far more capable than their reading scores suggest. Slowly, the pieces began to come together. As his reading skills improved, so did his confidence, independence, and willingness to take on new challenges. Today, he is a college student who reads for enjoyment.
That experience changed the direction of my life. It led me to study how children learn to read, work with hundreds of students and families, and eventually create Bright Futures Reading Lab — because I don't want families to spend years searching for answers the way we did.
Since then, we've helped hundreds of students and families develop stronger reading, language, and learning skills. Our goal is to help parents identify reading challenges early, understand what skills need support, and provide a clear path forward — so children can develop the literacy, communication, and confidence they need to succeed.
We found a path forward, and now we want to help other families find theirs.

Most reading programs focus on one thing: teaching a child to decode words. That matters — but it's rarely the whole picture.
Over nearly 30 years working at the intersection of education and technology — across K-12, higher education, medical education, and beyond — I kept noticing the same gap. Instruction focused on what to teach, and almost never on who was doing the learning: how they felt, how they thought, how they were wired to engage.
That's the gap Bright Futures Reading Lab is built to close.
We teach the whole learner, not just the skill
A child who feels anxious, discouraged, or ashamed about reading isn't in a state where instruction can really land — the emotional barrier has to come down before the academic work can take hold. That's why our approach incorporates concepts from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) directly into how we teach: helping students recognize and reframe the thoughts that show up when reading feels hard, rather than just pushing through them.
When a student comes to a session in a rough headspace — frustrated, anxious, shut down — we don't ignore it and plow ahead. Sometimes that means a few minutes of simple breathing exercises to help calm the nervous system before we start. Other times, we'll use rhythmic tapping to help a student settle and refocus. We won't claim tapping is a clinically proven technique — the honest answer is that we've simply seen it help, again and again, even if some of that benefit may come from the rhythm and repetition itself rather than anything more specific. What matters to us is what actually works for the student in front of us.
We believe engagement is the prerequisite, not an afterthought
Kids don't learn well when they are bored, anxious, or checked out. So instead of treating attention and confidence as nice-to-haves, we build every session around them — because a child who feels safe and engaged will always outlearn a child who's just going through the motions.

This approach — treating the whole learner, not just the reading skill — is why 98% of the students we've worked with reach grade-level or better in fluency, comprehension, communication, and composition.
